Development Process
We decided to go with the movement-based rendition for our game and the way
it ended out, it's really just weird. The style of our game is unconventional, while it's
not necessarily out there out there, it did build upon itself while designing our ideas.
For example, who our character was going to be in this game within a silly space
setting? Of course it couldn’t be an astronaut, but it also felt generic making a robot
with its own unique style.
Then, it hit me how cool it would be to see a fish in the place of a generic UFO
shape, which led to making the UFO design share some elements of a fish tank. Over
and over it affected every aspect of the game, like using the tank to display the health
of the player. Eventually creating the “space” the player navigates through, with its
own creative planets orbiting around.
The player plays a fish that navigates in 8 directions around a solar system in a
UFO, equipped with a turret that when clicking the left mouse button will shoot every 3 seconds, displayed by a charging animation. This is given to the player to fend off the
enemies that will chase the player from multiple different angles and varying speeds.
The ship the player flies is also given the ability to dash, using the space bar and a
short cooldown provides the player to dodge enemies. The player is given a goal to explore the solar system in an attempt to eliminate 3 aliens that are randomly generated, if they complete the mission. They are then given the opportunity to find a black hole that is also randomly generated, once found it will take the player home, winning the game.
The game uses an 8 directional movement with tinkering to the speed values that simulate the player moving withing a space with no gravity, while also controlling a turret that fires this ball of green idk, which is affected by the games planets, so like
depending on the size of the planet, the ball will have a stronger effect of gravity
toward it. Of course within this space the player sees other objects following the same
physical elements. The inspiration I can make is really the Frog Fractions game we
played, utilizing the similar mechanics with how the dragon sections played, like the 8
directional movement and firing mechanic, and the overall silly tone the game has,
being completely lighthearted, while still aiming to keep the player engaged.
